Walking and Hiking
September 30, 2022

I grew up on a farm close to Coldwater mountains. As a young boy, my brother, cousin and myself enjoyed walking and hiking all over the mountain.  We would spend all day exploring the waterfall and climbing steep slopes just to see what we could see from the top.  Our boy scout group would hike to the waterfall and camp for the night.  When my brother and I  grew older we would squirrel hunt on the mountain.  When my son could walk good, we would take short hikes on the mountain.  On one such hikes we stopped for a break and he found an old hunting knife.  The blade was so rusted that it had big pits in it.

When I grew older and enjoyed possum hunting, we walked over most of Coldwater Mountain.  We also lived within a few miles of the highest point in Alabama, Cheaha Mountain.  Cheaha has a lot of trails, fishing and swimming lakes.  Cheaha also has a lodge, cafeteria and cabins for rent.  I have deer, squirrel, possum and coon hunted all over the mountain.  Most of the trails point to a great scenic sight. I have been telling about good walking trails in the mountain, now I will tell about another favorite place.  Oxford Lake has a paved track that is about a mile around the lake.  The track has lights and security for people that want to walk, jog or run at night.
